Throat Cancer

Throat cancer is highly common with smokers. This cancer type is actually tumors that have come up inside of the throat which is your pharynx, or the voice box.

Symptoms of trouble

Chronic cough

Vocal changes and hoarseness

Hard time with swallowing

Pain that is within your ears

Having a sore throat or lump that will not heal up

Losing weight

This type of throat cancer comes up when genetic mutations inside the throat are present. Mutations like these are what will cause the cell growth, and these unhealthy cells continue living on after cells which are healthy die. All of these cancerous cells rapidly coming together will cause tumors.

There are about six types altogether of throat cancers. They are:

Supraglottic cancers This cancer will start out within the upper portion of the larynx. It also has an affect on the epiglottis. The epiglottis is the piece of cartilage you have there that prevents food from going the wrong way into your windpipe.

Nasopharyngeal cancer This cancer will begin in the part of the throat that is right behind your nose.

Oropharyngeal cancer This cancer will be inside the section of your throat that is directly behind your mouth area.

Hypopharyngeal cancer This is also called laryngopharyngeal cancer, starts out in the lower part of the throat. This means it is directly above the esophagus and also the windpipe.

Glottic cancer This is technically cancer of the vocal cords.

Lastly, there is:

Subglottic cancer which starts in the portion that is lower in the voice box below the vocal cords,

Causes of this cancer

The number one cause is smoking. Other causes can also be alcohol abuse, not taking care of your mouth hygiene by brushing your teeth often, a disease that is sexually transmitted, a poor diet, and if you have had exposure to asbestos.

The Complications of Throat Cancer When the ability to swallow is lost, this requires certain specialists to help you get your swallowing ability back. Most of the complications from this cancer all have to do with that problem.

You probably will have some pain and stiffness in the neck area as well, and due to the deep soreness in the throat, trouble speaking.

Doctor Help

An ear, nose, and throat doctor is the preferred specialist to see for this type of problem. Because time is brief with the doctor, write down any and all questions to ask.

Doctors will want to begin testing right away if cancer of this nature is suspected. Tests will be:

Using a lighted scope to get images of your throat and signs that things are abnormal there. A laryngoscope is helpful for getting a look into the voice box.

If the doctor see abnormalities, he or she will want to remove tissue samples for testing.

X-ray, and MRI's are used to determine how far and how serious the cancer has settled or is growing.

Staging once cancer is found will determine what the doctor will do as a treatment plan.

Treatment options are:

Radiation Radiation is best used for this type of a cancer, and has been known for the best in curing throat cancers. If cancers are just in the earlier stages, this is maybe all that is needed.

Surgery If the cancer is only in the throat surfaces or vocal cords, it can be removed through a laser, which will dissolve these little tumors.

Laryngectomy surgery is more serious. This means a at least a portion of your voice box will need removal. Sometimes, if the situation has gone very far, the whole voice box will be taken.

Throat surgery that takes a portion of the throat for smaller cancers is another treatment alternative. Doctors can reconstruct the portions of the throat you need to help you swallow food better.

Chemotherapies and targeted drug therapies may also be used to kill off cancer cells. Some drugs are able to fight off cancer cells that spur on more growth.

Other Prevention

Always use cautions around chemicals that are strong. This is an invitation for probably causing cancers of the throat.

Eat a healthy diet. The vitamins in fruits and vegetables may help avoid this cancer.
