Menieres Disease
Menieres Disease
is an ear disorder that causes severe bouts of vertigo, ringing in the ears, or sometimes a roaring. You might have a hearing loss with this disorder off and on, and a feeling of pressure in your ear that is most affected. This disease usually attacks just one ear, and will cause a hearing impairment in the affected ear. The symptomatology of this disease all has to do with how much fluid volume or buildup you are having in your inner ear. Endolymph has a lot to do with it. Endolymph is the fluid collection. The labrinyth is a part of the ear that this fluid buildup collects into. When you have any head movement, then fluid of course moves. The nerve receptors within the labrinyth is what tells the brain your movement. When fluid increases, this causes the over-amount of pressure you have.
The symptoms Symptoms of Menieres Disease arise suddenly. They can be on a daily basis or yearly. The disabling part of this disease is the vertigo along with deep nausea and the vomiting that can accompany it. Sometimes a warning signal that an attack is about to occur is the tinnitus you will experience in your ear. Diagnosis of Menieres Disease An ENT doctor will use several different types of procedures to diagnose this disorder. He or she will probably first do a hearing test for hearing loss, and also an MRI which will tell the doctor exactly what is going on inside the head. Hearing tests tell what kind and type of loss whether it is the inner ear, or else neural. Other types of hearing tests will tell the doctor your auditory response from the brain stem. A doctor will also probably irrigate the ears with air, or warm and cool water. This caloric testing which it is called, can tell your ENT a few things about whether or not you have a balance disorder. Treatments This ear disease is not curable, but through new dietary habits such as a low salt diet, this can reduce the amount of fluid retention for the body. Controlling caffeine intake can help as well. Surgery has been done for the people that are disabled with this problem. Doctors can do a vestibular neurectomy which is a disconnection of a nerve from the inner ear. This helps to manage the dizziness while still keeping the hearing.
