Inflammatory Breast Cancer

Inflammatory breast cancer is serious. This type of cancer is rare. And it is also aggressive and will quickly advance. This cancer is also the kind that will go from the point where it has started, and through tissues that are close by, and can easily affect the lymph nodes.

The types of breast cancer that are more common such as the cancer where there are lumps seen on a mammogram, are not present with inflammatory breast cancer. The breast site looks actually normal, until the cancer cells of the tumor, get into the lymph vessels, blocking them. The breast will then swell and become all filled with fluid, having the appearance of discoloration.

Women may think that they have an infection in the breast area, when in fact it is actually inflammatory breast cancer. A good way to easily prove this is the case, is when antibiotics do not clear up the problem.

Inflammatory breast cancer accounts for only 1 to 6 percent of all cancer cases in the US. The rates of survival are not very high than other types of breast cancers. There are now more treatment options that do more good, providing a better prognosis.

IBC will not usually cause an inflammation in the same manner an infection would.

Typical signs and symptoms are of the following:

There is a rapid change in the appearance of the breast.

You might notice that there is a thickness, heaviness, or an enlargement which is clearly visible in the breast.

Discoloration is present which will give a red, purple, pink or bruised appearance.

The skin is warm to the touch in the area.

A dimpling or ridges on the skin of the breast will usually be there.

Itching on the area.

Tenderness and pain is present

Lymph nodes are enlarged un the arm.

The nipple will turn flat or inward.

Breast will be swollen or have crusty skin on the nipple area.

Skin around the area will change color.

Mastitis can also cause some of the above symptoms, which is an infection. Breastfeeding is usually what will cause infections. And with a breast infection, you'll likely run a fever.

Having a surgery on the breast area, or if you are receiving radiation therapy, it can prevent the lymphatic vessels in the breast skin. This can make the breast area all swollen along with having discoloration or bruising. When these changes are brought on by either of those two things, they will go away a little bit at a time.

The exact cause of inflammatory breast cancer is not known. Remember, all types of cancer begin with cell divisions which are not regulated in some way. This starts with a cell that is not normal in the first place. In IBC, it is a cell in one of the ducts of the breast. When you have IBC, the cells that are not normal, will quickly seek control, and block the lymphatic cells in the skin. This blockage problem causes skin that is very swollen and red.

The Risk Factors

Inflammatory breast cancer seems to appear in women at 59 years of age on the average. Women that are African-American are more affected then Causcasian women.

Medical Help

You should seek medical help with any unusual changes mentioned in the symptoms above. The doctor should do an thorough evaluation. There will usually be a mammogram done, an MRI, and possibly a biopsy if this condition is suspected.

An excisional biopsy which is where they take samples of your skin along with tissue, will be examined in the laboratory microscopically. What they are looking for is clumps of cells which are cancerous, since this is how it appears.

Ultrasounds are good for telling whether or not there is skin thickening, which is typical in this case.

When IBC is confirmed

After a definite diagnosis is made, a determination on how advanced the cancer is will be the next goal. A CAT scan may be done to see if there is cancer in other places in the body, or metasteses.

They will also test cancer for hormones progesterone and also estrogen. This is to see about whether or not there is a presence of receptors of these hormones.

They usually will classify IBC as stage 3B or 4. If you have stage 3B, this means locally advanced, which says that it has gotten into lymph nodes that are near. In stage 4, the cancer has traveled on to other body parts.

Treatment is usually started with chemotherapy drugs first of all. Then there is also some radiation and surgery after the chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is need in many treatments to kill the cancer cells present before surgery is done. Surgery, which is a mastectomy will be usually be needed to remove the cancerous breast.
