Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is very serious, and there are two types of it. There is the one called a squamous cell carcinoma which come from squamous cells that are part of the esophagus lining. This cancer type usually is found in the upper part or else middle of the esophagus.

Adenocarcinomas are of the type of cancer that is glandular in its nature. These cancers come up within the lower portion of the esophagus.

This cancer is very able to spread around outside of the esophageal area, and easily gets into lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are really the body's immunity system. This cancer is especially dangerous since it can move over into other body parts that are critical such as the bones, your brain, lungs or liver.

Like with many cancer types out there, the cause of esophagus cancer remains as unknown. Certain things can trigger a response though such as:

Chewing tobacco

Aging

Cigarette smoking
Barrett's Esophagus can easily turn into esophageal cancer

Irritants of other types include when you have damages to your esophagus when taking in dangerous substances.

People that have had cancers previously that involve the upper body, (meaning the neck or head area), are liable to be a risk factor.

Excessive Alcohol consumption can increase your risk of esophageal cancers.

Symptomatology

Symptoms of this condition are of the following:

Trouble swallowing foods. If you are having this symptom, seek a doctors advice immediately. This is very serious.

You are losing weight drastically.

Your throat is always hoarse and you always cough a lot.

Throwing up

Bloody cough

Diagnosis of Esophagus Cancer

After a doctor evaluates your whole history thoroughly, he or she is likely to perform the following types of test to determine whether or not the problem is esophageal cancer:

Am endoscopy is an exam of your esophagus through a tool that is lighted. This is called an endoscope. They will give you an anesthetic that will sedate you so you'll not feel anything. The doctor will pick up cells for examination. This is a biopsy.

Barium swallow. This is x-rays that are a series for the esophagus. The barium you drink will making a coating on the insides of the esophagus. Barium picks up on changes within the esophagus.

Stages

If the diagnosis of cancer of the esophagus is confirmed, a doctor will need to then find out what stage it is you are into. The following is usually typical:

Stage One

Your cancer is only located in the top layers of cells of the esophagus.

Stage Two

This means that the cancer present is in deeper layers of the esophagus lining. It may also have progressed into nearby lymph nodes.

Stage Three

The invasion of the cancer is deeper into walls of the esophagus. It is within the lymph nodes near the esophagus. Other body parts are not yet affected.

Stage Four

The cancer is now advanced and into other body parts other than the esophagus.

Scans that will determine the spreading is a CT scan. This gives an in-depth view of the body.

A scan of the bones can tell whether or not cancer is actually part of the bones.
