Endometrial Cancer

Endometrial cancer is one of the more common cancers with women. This type of cancer usually starts out in the endometrium which is the lining of a uterus. It is more known to occur after the menopausal years moreso then before this period. Another term for this cancer is uterine cancer. However, other cells in the uterus such as muscle for instance, can also become cancerous.

Endometrial cancer can often be found at the earlier stages since one of the first signs noticed is vaginal bleeding. If mensturation is still occuring, then this bleeding happens often between the cycles of periods, and if after menopause, vaginal bleeding frequently occurs. So this is the sign that raises doctors suspicions.

When found out early, which it usually is due to the bleeding being the main sign. This cancer is diagnosed in a couple of definitive ways:

A D&C is done which is actual surgery to remove tissue samples or lining from the uterus. The cervix will be dilated in this procedure and a tool called a curette is put into the uterus that removes tissue from it. This is checked out in the laboratory for cancer cells.

They can do an endometrial biopsy which involves a thin tube that has flexibility up through the cervix and into the uterus. A piece of tissue is gently scraped from the endometrium, taking tissue samples for examination in the laboratory.

Once cancer is confirmed, the treatment of choice is to have a hysterectomy. If the endometrial cancer is more advanced, then radiation therapy is the next option after uterus removal. Internal radiation therapy uses an x-ray that is very strong, energetic for killing cancerous cells or to stop growth. If you are receiving what is called external radiation therapy,a special machine is used outside of your body, sending powerful radioactive substances into the cancer.

Hormone therapy can be used in this type of cancer treatment. This type of treatment will take away hormones or prvents the cancerous action in cells from further growth. When medical tests prove that these cancer cells are such that hormones can attach, then drug therapy is used to stop the hormone production.

Chemotherapy is the most favored cancer treatment when there are really no other options. Chemotherapy can be taken orally, or it is usually given by an intravenous to be the most effective. How the chemo is given depends mostly upon how aggressive this cancer is.

Follow-up care is needed after treatments are ended to make certain of no more cancers present. Of course, tests will be repeated off and on to see how the treatment is working for you. Decisions about further treatment are based upon these results. Learn about women's sexual health!
