The responsibility of the colon is to process all waste material after you eat. The rectal area is right at the end of your colon. All of this together is actually the large intestine. Tumors that are both of the rectum or colon come from the walls of your large intestine, (inner walls). When you have polyps that are not cancerous, (in other words benign), can be removed through a colonoscopy. These are harmless, but if left alone, can turn into cancers. Once turned cancerous, they will grow and invade surrounding organs and other tissues. The liver and lungs are the most common places for invasion. This cancer can then easily metastasize, and turn incurable.
What causes colon cancer?
It has been mentioned by doctors and other researchers that a high fat diet can bring on this cancer. A family history, and also polyps that are not removed, can easily turn into colorectal cancer. Ulcerative colitis is another known cause. Another well known cause is Crohn's Disease.
The symptoms
Symptomatology for this cancer is of the following:
Fatigue
Changes in bowel habits
Abdominal pains
Weight Loss of unknown origin
Blood in stools
Constipation or Diarrhea
How would a doctor diagnose this Cancer type?
One of the main tests usually done is a lower GI series which includes a barium enema x-ray. A colonoscopy is very helpful in establishing a diagnosis as well. In fact, doctors can examine polyps from tissue samples with the colonoscopy.
Blood tests might include a CEA. CEA is something that is in the body brought on by cancer cells themselves. This blood substance is found to be very high in patients with colorectal cancers.
Prevention
Change of eating habits and the right diet are very important. Fiber in the diet is advantageous since it helps stools become bulky helping intestines to be rid of cancer causing agents in foods known as carcinogens.
