Astigmatism
Astigmatism
is a problem where you have blurry vision because of the eye's cornea. The cornea problem is that there is an abnormal shape, or that the lens has a curvature. When this happens, then light has trouble focusing from the retina. This is a condition that many people have. If you have just a small amount of astigmatism, it won't usually have an effect on your visual field to any large degree. But if there is a lot of this visual problem present, this can cause visual disturbances, makes the eyes feel miserable, and there are frequently headaches that accompany the problem. If you are nearsighted or farsighted, then this visual disturbance can occur often. Eye doctors label this refractive errors when you have a combination of both problems in the eyes. Causes of this vision problem are not exactly well known. It is possible to be an inherited factor that a child may grow up with. The problem may either improve or not as child grows older.
When you have an eye check-up, it should include a test for this vision problem. If you have the problem, they can give you eyeglasses that will correct the problem. The eyeglasses they make are specially equipped to adjust the ways in which light enters. Another method used to treat the problem, will use a procedure that is not invasive called orthokeratology. What this means is that you will wear a specially made contact lenses. The contact lenses will turn your eyes to the proper shape so that the cornea is no longer curved. They have a laser technique that is available for some types of astigmatism. The laser procedures will reshape the cornea by taking away little amounts of eye tissue. These lasers use a high beam on the eye in correcting the problem. Tests that your eye specialist might do for this problem are of the following: Refraction test This test is where your doctor will use a tool called a phoropter. There is a lenses series that he or she will put right in front of your eyes just to tell about how your eyes are focusing light. Visual Acuity Test This is done at every eye check-up. It is the test that tells your vision number as being 20/20, 20/40, etc. Keratometry testing uses an keratometer. This is an instrument that will be able to measure the cornea's curvature. This tool also helps the eye specialist to measure you for contact lenses fitting.
